Hybrid practices meet nation-state language policies: Transcarpathia in the twentieth century and today
2016
AbstractFrom the early twentieth century to the present day, Transcarpathia has belonged to several states: the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy, Czechoslovakia, the Hungarian Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and finally to Ukraine. The status of what counts as a minority and a majority language has changed each time the state affiliation has been changed. Based on the long term research by Csernicskó, and on the one-month fieldwork carried out by Laihonen in 2012, our goal is to provide an autonomous critical account and discourse analysis of the linguistic situation in Transcarpathia. We draw examples especially from the linguistic landscape, which documents the hybrid practices difficult to catch w…
The changing schoolscape in a Szekler village in Romania: signs of diversity in rehungarization
2015
In this paper, we explore the connections between a linguistic landscape and language ideologies in an elementary school in a village within the Hungarian region of Szeklerland in Romania. This ‘schoolscape’ is analysed as a display or materialization of the ‘hidden curriculum’ regarding the construction of linguistic and cultural identities. We draw on fieldwork carried out in 2012 and 2013 and examine two dimensions of change in progress: (1) changes in the use of Hungarian and Romanian as languages of teaching and learning and as languages of written administration; and (2) changes in the display of these languages in the schoolscape. Since 1990, there has been a tendency towards rehunga…

The University of Jyväskylä's Hungarian Studies Program celebrated its twentieth anniversary with an international conference, held on March 15, 2011. The event was opened by Rector Matti Manninen, who at that time served as the Vice-Rector of the university. The conference participants included people from six European countries who not only commended Jyväskylä's Hungarian Studies Program, but took accounts of the history of the main international institutions of Hungarian Studies abroad as well, devoting special attention to the developments in the last two decades after the political transition in Hungary. Käännöskokemuksia : käännösprosessin ja käännösratkaisujen tarkastelua
2012
Pro gradu -tutkielmani tarkoituksena on esitellä prosessikääntämistä työtapana sekä tarkastella erilaisia käännösratkaisuja. Työni perustuu serbianunkarilaisen Ottó Tolnain tekstien suomentamiseen käännöskursseilla- ja seminaareissa. Tutkielma rakentuu kahdesta osasta. Ensimmäisessä osassa käsittelen käännösprosessia, jossa tärkeimpänä näkökulmana on prosessikääntäminen. Teoriaosassa käsittelen prosessikirjoittamisen periaatteita, joihin prosessikääntämisen idea perustuu sekä esittelen kokemuksia näiden työtapojen soveltamisesta käytännössä käännöskursseilla ja -seminaareissa. Omien kokemusteni lisäksi esittelen myös kolmen muun Tolnaita kääntäneen opiskelija-kääntäjän kokemuksia. Prosessik…
Mi az eredeti? : A nyelvváltás mint fordítási probléma Terézia Mora Das Ungeheuer című regényében
2022
The following study is part of my research work on self-reflection in literary translation. Using this case study, I intend to present the aspects and dilemmas faced by literary translators attempting to gauge the success of their work. My baseline questions were: Is the success or failure of a translation solution always determinable? What external and internal expectations must be observed, and to what extent? Where does the process of self-examination start, and when (if ever) can it be considered over? To investigate these questions I chose a special, perhaps even extreme case; namely an element of Terézia Mora’s novel Das Ungeheuer / The Monster which the author had originally written …
The management of diversity in schoolscapes: an analysis of Hungarian practices
2015
The material environment of formal education (i.e., schoolscape) is determined not only by laws and local regulations, but by the visual practices of the given institution as well. Inscriptions and cultural symbols placed on the façade and the walls of the school building are tools for orienting the choice between various cultural and linguistic values and ideologies (Johnson 1980; Brown 2012). Based on photographs and research interviews collected in Budapest, I analyse both the material environments of four schools and the metadiscourses through which such spaces are interpreted and regulated. Investigation took place in both mainstream state schools as well as in private schools with alt…
A magyar nyelvi standardhoz kapcsolódó nyelvi ideológiák a romániai Banságban
2009
A tanulmány a magyar nyelvi standarddal foglalkozik. A használt elméleti keret a nyelvi ideológiák kutatása, amelyet kiegészítettem a társalgáselemzés módszertanával. A nyelvi standard jellegzetesen ideológiai fogalom. A magyar nyelvészetben is nyelven kívüli jegyekkel definiálják a magyar nyelvi standard kifejezést.
